AUCTION LOT #46

Tom Sawyer Island
Confederate Musket

This confederate musket (circa 1864) which hung in the fort on Tom Sawyer Island, will come complete in a wooden presentation case which has accompanied the musket for many years.

Expert gun appraiser John R. Gangel has inspected the musket and offers the following details on its provenance.  [The] "Brass Mounted Confederate Fayetteville 1864 dated .58 cal. Mississippi rifle, remains in original good condition with gray/brown patina finish, light to moderate surface pitting and erosion overall, lock markings appar genuine.  "CSA" on butt-plate is questionable (markings often were added later by dealers and collectors, which may have been the case here), barrel is Union arsenal proofed.  These type of Confederate arms were assembled using Union parts on hand with Confederate made locks, stocks and what was necessary to complete a functioning arm.  Stock appears to be a genuine Confederate stock."
