CEL
A clear plastic sheet onto which a drawing is copied, either by hand-inking or by a xerographic copier process. Colored paints are applied to the reverse side. One or more cels may be placed over a painted background, which serves as a setting for the action. In animated movies and cartoons, twenty-four cels are required for each second of screen time. Cel is an abbreviation for Celluloid (trademark).

CHARGER
The title "charger" comes from traditional dinner settings and is the large plate that is used under the dinner plate for decorative purposes. These large plates have become a popular medium for paintings, as their large size allows for complicated scenes.

COURVOISIER CEL
A cel originally sold through the Courvoisier Galleries in the late 30's and 40's. Since this was the first marketing attempt by Disney, these galleries were subject to the finest art of their time. Courvosier Cels have a very distinctive look and many times have wood grain type backgrounds.

EMBELLISHED GICLÉE
A giclée is "embellished" when the artist adds to the finished print using an art medium such as pastel, pen, acrylic, etc. As each print is individually done, no two will be alike. The artist may just add a few strokes, or actually change the look of the original piece.

GICLÉE

HORS DE COMMERCE
These are artworks which not equal in quality to the general edition that may have minor flaws. These usually aren't signed and are canceled in some way, such as a hole in a corner or a stamp indicating they are not for sale. These artworks are used by sales people to show to potential clients. They are often marked with the letters "HC."

LIMITED EDITION CEL
A hand-inked and hand-painted cel created specifically for the retail market, limited in quantity to 500 pieces or less.
